Schriever Space Force Base: Complete 2026 Guide
Schriever Space Force Base — located 14 miles east of Colorado Springs in Falcon, Colorado — is one of the most operationally critical installations in the U.S. military. Home to satellite command and control for GPS, missile warning, and space surveillance missions, Schriever SFB is a compact but high-security post with a unique culture distinct from its larger neighbor Peterson SFB.
Mission and Major Units
Schriever SFB hosts several Space Deltas under Space Operations Command (SpOC), each responsible for a specific domain of space operations:
- Space Delta 2 (SD2): Space Domain Awareness — tracks every object in Earth orbit including satellites, debris, and potential threats. Operates the Space Fence and other global surveillance networks.
- Space Delta 6 (SD6): Cyberspace operations for space systems — protecting U.S. satellite constellations from cyber threats.
- Space Delta 7 (SD7): Space intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance.
- Space Delta 8 (SD8): Satellite communications — command and control of MILSTAR, AEHF, and WGS satellite systems.
- Space Delta 10 (SD10): Space electronic warfare and space battle management.
- GPS Master Control Station: The primary ground control facility for the entire GPS constellation — a 24/7 operation that keeps navigation accurate for billions of users worldwide.
- 50th Space Wing (transitioning): Installation and range management for Schriever.
What to Expect on Base
Schriever SFB is a smaller installation compared to Peterson or Fort Carson. Facilities are functional but limited — most families rely on Peterson SFB or civilian Colorado Springs for major amenities. Key on-post facilities include:
| Facility | Notes |
|---|---|
| Fitness Center | On-post gym, open to all assigned personnel |
| Dining Facility (DFAC) | Hot meals during duty hours |
| Small Exchange (shoppette) | Limited PX items; full PX at Peterson SFB |
| Child Development Center | Limited capacity; waitlist recommended |
| Visitor Control Center | All visitors require escort; CAC required for unescorted entry |
For full commissary, hospital, legal, and family support services, most Schriever personnel use Peterson SFB facilities (20–25 min drive). TRICARE is available through Peterson's medical clinic or Evans Army Hospital.
Housing for Schriever Families
There is no on-post housing at Schriever SFB. All personnel live off-post, which means your BAH goes directly to you as cash to cover civilian housing costs. This is actually a financial advantage — many families pocket several hundred dollars per month by finding housing below their BAH rate.

Security Clearance Culture
Nearly all positions at Schriever SFB require a Top Secret/SCI clearance. If your clearance is pending upon arrival, your in-processing timeline may be affected — coordinate early with your gaining unit's security manager. Spouses working on post will also require background checks for unescorted access.
In-Processing at Schriever SFB
In-processing at Schriever runs through the Military Personnel Flight (MPF) located at Peterson SFB — not at Schriever itself.
