TRICARE Colorado Springs 2026: Everything Military Families Need to Know
Updated January 2026 • 11 min read • Healthcare
Getting your family's healthcare sorted out within the first week of arriving at a new duty station isn't optional — it's urgent. Whether you have a family member with chronic needs, a baby on the way, or just want to know where to go when the stomach bug hits at 2am, this guide covers everything about TRICARE in Colorado Springs for Fort Carson and Peterson SFB families.
The Two Main Military Medical Facilities
Evans Army Community Hospital (Fort Carson)
Evans Army Community Hospital (EACH) at Fort Carson is a full-service military hospital serving the entire Fort Carson community. It has inpatient and outpatient capabilities, a labor and delivery ward, behavioral health services, pediatrics, OB/GYN, general surgery, and an emergency department. Evans is the primary TRICARE Prime Military Treatment Facility (MTF) for Fort Carson families. Phone: (719) 526-7200, Building 1000.
Peterson SFB Medical Clinic
Peterson SFB operates a smaller clinic — not a hospital — providing primary care, preventive medicine, and routine outpatient services. Complex cases are referred to Evans or civilian network providers. TRICARE Service Center: Building 350, (719) 556-6765.
Choosing the Right TRICARE Plan
TRICARE Prime at the MTF
If you live near Fort Carson or Peterson SFB, TRICARE Prime using the on-post MTF is your zero-cost option. You pay nothing for care, but you need a referral from your Primary Care Manager (PCM) to see specialists. The trade-off is appointment availability — Evans is busy, and non-urgent specialist appointments can take weeks. For most healthy families, this is the best financial choice.
TRICARE Select
TRICARE Select lets you see any TRICARE-authorized civilian provider without a referral. You'll pay cost shares (20% for in-network, 25% for out-of-network after deductible), but you get more flexibility and often faster appointments. Good for families who need frequent specialist care or have strong relationships with specific civilian providers. Colorado Springs has an extensive TRICARE Select network.
Enrolling Your Family Step by Step
- Visit the TRICARE Service Center at Evans (Bldg 1000) or Peterson (Bldg 350) with military IDs and orders
- Choose TRICARE Prime (MTF) or TRICARE Select
- Select a Primary Care Manager (PCM) — ask for a provider with availability; staff can tell you current patient loads
- Enrollment is effective within 24–48 hours
- For TRICARE Dental (TDP), enroll separately at tricare.mil/dental — this covers family members; active duty dental is handled at the Fort Carson DENTAC
Finding a Pediatrician in Colorado Springs
Pediatric care at Evans is excellent but often booked out for new patient appointments during peak PCS season (May–August). Here are your options:
- Evans Pediatrics (on-post): Best for families enrolled in Prime at the MTF. Same-day sick appointments are generally available. Building 1000. (719) 526-7200.
- UCHealth pediatricians: Large civilian network throughout Colorado Springs; accepts TRICARE Select. Multiple locations including near Peterson SFB on the east side.
- Children's Hospital Colorado (COS campus): For pediatric specialty care — neurology, cardiology, orthopedics, developmental pediatrics.
- Private pediatric practices: Many accept TRICARE Select. Search at tricare.mil/FindDoctor filtering for pediatrics in Colorado Springs.
OB/GYN and Prenatal Care
If you're pregnant or planning to become pregnant, Evans has a robust OB/GYN department with labor and delivery. Enroll in TRICARE and establish OB care as early as possible — Evans OB books out quickly. For high-risk pregnancies, Evans coordinates with civilian maternal-fetal medicine specialists. Peterson families typically use civilian OB/GYN providers in the network with TRICARE Select.
Mental Health: What's Available and What's Not on the Record
